VICTA is pleased to be delivering this session to help parents of visually impaired young people look after their family’s mental health. The session is being run in partnership with psychotherapist Laura Fuller, who is both severely sight impaired herself, and a parent of a VI child, bringing a unique insight to share!
Laura Fuller:
“Hello! My name is Laura, I’m severely sight impaired and benefited greatly from VICTA’s support as a kid! I’m now a mum myself with a visually impaired daughter so have experience of both sides of the coin when it comes to VI difficulties. I also happen to be a registered psychotherapist specialising in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy! We all know how difficult it can be to balance our own mental health needs whilst looking after everyone else, our kids wellbeing certainly tends to come first! However what we also know is that good practice to managing our kids wellbeing is that it starts directly with us, so the importance of looking after ourselves is definitely something we can dedicate a bit of time to. This workshop gives you the opportunity to reflect on your own mental health, (whether that be what’s difficult, or even what works in maintaining it) and how being on the journeys you are with your kiddos can impact this.
The workshop firstly aims to give you knowledge in recognising warning signs in dips in your mental health, as well as ways to manage this. It also allows us to start to address that age old issue of how to balance our lifestyles in a way that benefits everyone’s wellbeing (including your own). Additionally, we can provide you with resources to expand your knowledge beyond the workshop and even start to implement any of the ideas that you may have found particularly interesting!”
Aims
• A better understanding of what mental health issues are and where they come from.
• To understand the impact being a parent/carer to a young person with additional needs has on your mental health.
• To explore different aspects to life and evaluate the different areas to determine what changes can be made to find balance.
• To develop strategies to model behaviour for the people we care for, when responding to stress and anxiety.
Who is this session for?
This session is aimed at parents of children and young people who are registered as visually impaired and are keen on exploring how to manage emotional wellbeing and take better care of ourselves.
