VICTA is pleased to announce the Parent Portal’s collaboration with SIBS, the UK’s only charity that supports siblings of young people with disabilities. This parent focused workshop will help you understand how to support your VI child’s siblings and examine the effects growing up with a sibling with a disability can have. Offering practical advice, therapeutic techniques and support strategies, you will complete this workshop having had plenty of light bulb moments!
“Acknowledging your sibling child’s feelings about their disabled brother or sister, or about family life and school, is one of the most important things you can do to support them. You may not be able to change what is happening at home, but you can respond to how your child feels about things in a way that makes them feel you really care and understand.”
The aim of this workshop is to better equip you with the tools that you need in order to support not only a positive relationship with your sibling child, but also create an environment where resentment is less likely to develop. This tends to happen a lot in families of disabled children as the siblings usually get or feel they get less parental attention. Responding well to siblings’ complaints helps to improve siblings’ relationships with each other.
We will also have a one-hour follow-up session the week after the workshop on Thursday 29 of July. This session will give you the perfect opportunity to discuss the workshop as parents together and find out more about other services siblings of children with a visual impairment are currently accessing. We have a number of guest speakers who will be happy to answer any questions and it is also an opportunity to share your own concerns and/or offer advice to the other attendees.
If you would like to attend the sessions, please complete the application form before the closing date on 19 July 2021. If you have any questions, please email Charlotte at firstname.lastname@example.org.
