We are pleased to be joined by Viv Hollis, who will be delivering a session about how to support our vision impaired children with building connections.
Children with vision impairment can sometimes face unique challenges in developing social skills, building friendships and growing in social confidence.
This workshop is aimed at parents/carers of primary-school aged children and will explores how sight loss can influence social development, while considering practical strategies to support children’s independence, social confidence and positive peer relationships at home, in school and in the wider community.
About the presenter
Viv has worked in education for over 25 years, beginning her career as a primary school teacher before specialising in the field of vision impairment and multi-sensory impairment (deafblindness). She currently works as a Qualified Teacher for Vision Impairment (QTVI) and Qualified Teacher for Multi-Sensory Impairment (QTMSI) in central London, supporting children and young people with a range of sensory needs.
Viv also holds a Master’s degree in Inclusive Education, specialising in deafblindness and is particularly interested in promoting children and young people’s independence, self-advocacy and social confidence.
Alongside her professional expertise, Viv brings lived experience to work. She has a congenital vision impairment and is a guide dog user, giving her a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities faced by children and families navigating sight loss.
