A love of reading can build confidence, provide escapism and spark creativity. Join VICTA Parents as we explore the power of reading for pleasure in children and young people as we prepare to celebrate literacy and storytelling in March, in the run-up to World Book Day.
We are delighted to be joined by Tom from RNIB’s Education and Children Service who will share the different ways in which families can support and inspire their child or young adult to access reading. Tom develops information and resources on RNIB’s website and RNIB Bookshare, and previously worked in advice and guidance, youth work and activity coordination roles, with a passion for encouraging people to take action. In his own time, Tom studies linguistics and he’s also an avid reader – his favourite books are ‘The Little Prince’ by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and ‘The Dispossessed’ by Ursula K. Le Guin.
We’ll also hear from two young VI adults who will share their passion for literacy: Grace, a keen poet, who is currently undertaking a PhD incorporating creative writing and Catherine, VICTA’s Youth Engagement and Digital Content Officer. As a child, Catherine was a huge Jacqueline Wilson and Cathy Cassidy fan and really enjoyed reading books about little girls her own age and imagining what it would be like to be them.
